Whether you are traveling or still at home, here are tips to recover. Do you want to know what to eat when you have diarrhea? Keep reading.
When you travel and get out of your routine, it is easy for changes in diet, water and others to end up affecting your digestive system. In most cases it may not affect you at all, although if you are unlucky you may end up following one of these two opposite paths: that of constipation or that of diarrhea.
We have already talked at length about the first, so let's see what to eat when you have diarrhea to pass it as quickly and as well as possible.
Why does diarrhea appear
The most common is that acute diarrhea appears as a result of a gastrointestinal infection or because drugs with laxative properties such as some antibiotics or antacids based on magnesium salts are being taken. The first and also most frequent can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and appear well by contagion due to contact with other people who suffer from it, by contact with animals or when traveling to areas with poor sanitary conditions. This last case is what is known as traveler's diarrhea.
Regardless of the origin of the diarrhea, its treatment rarely involves the administration of medications, but is limited to following a series of guidelines that favor rehydration and an adequate diet that does not worsen the symptoms.
“The Aquarius is good for diarrhea, right? "
During diarrhea the risk of dehydration is especially high, so doctors often recommend drinking a lot of fluids. They generally refer to water, alkaline lemonade, or rehydrating serums.
However, in recent times it has become very fashionable to drink sports drinks such as Aquarius or Gatorade when the truth is that they are not the most appropriate for two reasons:
1. The mineral lost during diarrhea (potassium) is different from that lost through sweat (sodium). This type of drink only replenishes sodium so it is still lacking in potassium.
2. They contain a large amount of sugar which can make the situation worse.
Caffeinated and / or sugary drinks are also completely discouraged.
What to drink when you have diarrhea to avoid dehydration
For oral rehydration in acute diarrhea, UNICEF and WHO recommend the following formula known as universal rehydration serum:
• Boiled water, 1 litre
• Glucose, 20 g
• Sodium chloride, 3.5 g
• Potassium chloride, 1.5 g
• Sodium bicarbonate, 2.5 g
And it is a universal formula that is sold in any pharmacy in the world in sachets that you just have to mix with water. It is usually not a bad idea to take one with us if we are going to travel to a country where we foresee that we could have problems of this type.
If necessary, a formula with a similar composition known as alkaline lemonade can be prepared at home, with the following ingredients:
• Boiled water, 1 liter
• Sugar, 2 tablespoons (provides glucose)
• Salt, 1/2 tablespoon of coffee (provides sodium chloride)
• Baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon
• Juice of a medium lemon (for potassium)
In both cases, the preparation should be drunk in small quantities every one or two hours and, after 24 hours, throw away the remaining one and prepare a new one.
If it is a mild diarrhea, you can maintain hydration by drinking water or infusions without sugar, such as tea or chamomile.
What to eat when you have diarrhea and what foods to avoid
Depending on the intensity of the symptoms, it is possible that at first the appetite disappears completely, but even so it is essential to replace the water, glucose and electrolytes that are lost with diarrhea. Otherwise, you are more likely to suffer dehydration.
In general, the diet in case of diarrhea should consist of three phases:
1. Fasting phase, which depending on the intensity can last between 6 and 24 hours, in which only the rehydration formulas in the previous section will be taken.
2. A person with diarrhea can and should eat if they have an appetite. Of course, no excesses. The digestive system already has enough to recover to put it to work at full capacity with a copious meal. It is best to follow a soft diet in which fats and foods rich in fiber are avoided. For example, white rice boiled with carrots, water from boiling rice, or pasta soups made from light broths and refined cereal pasta.
3. Little by little, as improvement is noticed, you can add boiled chicken and fish, toasted white bread, natural yogurt without sugar.
During the entire convalescence period, the following should be avoided:
• foods rich in fiber, because they increase the volume of the intestinal bolus and stimulate the mobility of the intestine.
• milk, because it has lactose and is a food difficult to digest for most adults
• foods high in fat, because they require very long digestions.
• fried, spicy and excessively salty foods because they can irritate the gastric mucosa.
As always, you have to keep in mind that these are general guidelines on what to eat when you have diarrhea and that you should follow what your doctor tells you.

CBD, which consists of molecular shapes similar to endocannabinoids, when administered to an individual, the molecules attach themselves to the same receptors and trigger a chain of responses that regulate the brain cells when secreting the neurotransmitters. As researchers suggest, this reaction is critical to the functioning or lack of functioning of the ECS has an important relationship to the pathology of IBD and Crohn’s disease.
