Higher DHA Levels Linked to Better Learning in College Students: Study
A new observational study from Chile suggests that high school students with higher levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in their blood performed better on university screening tests.
Data from 122 high school graduates indicated that DHA, but not other fatty acids, was associated with better results on the University Selection Tests (PSU), including language achievement in school (LSA) and achievement. School in Mathematics (MSA). The data is published in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids.
"The results of this study underscore the importance of DHA in the learning process at the school level, especially in the University Selection Test (PSU)," wrote the researchers from the University of Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Universidad de Los Andes and the University of Development.
"Therefore, these findings may be useful in supporting Omega-3 fatty acid nutrition and educational and health planning to protect children from an early age and improve their school outcomes."
Study results
From an initial cohort of 671 high school graduates, 550 of them took the PSU for LSA, while 548 took the PSU for MSA. The researchers limited their analysis to adolescents with the highest and lowest school achievements, offering data on 122 participants.
The results showed that DHA, socio-economic status and head circumference for age were the most relevant relationships for both LSA and MSA.
"From 12 years of age, there is no significant evidence on the impact of DHA on MSA and LSA, as studies are scarce," the researchers wrote. “Therefore, the findings of the present study would be the first to establish the high and significant relationship between DHA levels in erythrocytes and performance in PSU tests, the baccalaureate exams for university admission in the national coverage in Chili."
"These results can be useful in planning education, nutrition and health, in order to protect children from an early age and thus improve their school results.
High blood pressure (hypertension) can quietly damage your body for years before symptoms develop. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to disability, a poor quality of life, or even a fatal heart attack or stroke.
