We have all heard about arthritis and osteoarthritis, two diseases related to the joints that affect thousands of people in Spain. However, we may not be very clear about the differences between one and the other.
Causes and differences
Despite the fact that both ailments are related to the joints (as already mentioned) and cause intense pain that significantly affects the patient's quality of life, the causes that generate these diseases are different:
On the one hand, arthritis, as a general rule (since there are different types), is related to an inflammation of the synovial membrane that surrounds our joints. This inflammation can be caused by various factors ranging from an autoimmune disease to trauma or an infection that attacks our joints. This type of disease can affect young people or even children, as with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
On the contrary, osteoarthritis is related to the aging of people. As our age advances, the joints of our body, especially those of the hands, knees, hips or spine; they are affected and little by little the cartilage that surrounds them is wearing away and that prevents friction between our bones. Thus, when this cartilage has finished wearing down, our bones rub against each other causing stiffness of the joints and intense pain. Although this ailment affects both men and women, the age of onset of symptoms varies, with early onset in women (around 45 years of age) and may not manifest until60 years in men.
Similarities
Although the origins of these ailments are significantly different, people tend to confuse them due to the enormous similarities they present:
• Both pathologies directly affect the joints.
• Both cause intense pain and the appearance of joint stiffness, affecting the quality of life of the patient.
• The s obrepeso and obesity are aggravating in both diseases, so it is important to lead a healthy life.
• In both there is a progressive loss of mobility that ends up causing the patient to cease to be autonomous.
Treatments
This point can make a major difference between the two pathologies. On the one hand, osteoarthritis, being a disease caused by body degeneration, does not have an effective treatment to eliminate it. There is only the possibility of providing anti-inflammatories and other medications that help the patient to bear the pain that this disease causes.
On the other hand, if we talk about arthritis, if you have a more or less effective treatment aimed at eliminating the inflammation of the synovial membrane before it affects the muscles and bones. Patients suffering from arthritis will have treatments that vary depending on the causes of the disease since, for example, if it is caused by an infection, the osteoarthritis will disappear as soon as the infection is eliminated. However, the most common treatments are corticosteroids and some type of pain suppressant.
These are some guidelines that will help you differentiate both pathologies. It is important to prevent them from doing physical exercise regularly as it will help us increase our bone density and the muscle mass of our body. From AFEMEFA we recommend that, if you are detecting any of the symptoms of these two diseases, you go to your doctor as soon as possible since an early detection of any of these ailments can be a key factor in their progress and your recovery.

Infections of the brain can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or, occasionally, protozoa or parasites. Another group of brain disorders, called spongiform encephalopathies, are caused by abnormal proteins called prions. Infections of the brain often also involve other parts of the central nervous system, including the spinal cord. The brain and spinal cord are usually protected from infection, but when they become infected, the consequences are often very serious.
